REMEMBER: The 30/30 rule. If you hear thunder or see lightning you must vacate the field and let 30 minutes pass after the last thunder or lightning.
COACHES: Please use your discretion when on the fields. We cannot afford to damage those fields.
Email firstname.lastname@example.org if the field status seems outdated. However, we generally will wait until approximately an hour and half prior to the first scheduled game on game days before making a go / no-go determination. On practice days we may wait until an hour prior to the first scheduled practice. For more information, read our posted "Severe Weather Policy" below.
Games and practices are to be suspended whenever lightning is seen or thunder is heard (no matter how far away it may seem) or whenever weather conditions make it unsafe to play. It is the shared responsibility of Coaches, Parents, and Officials to ensure this policy is made known and enforced.
The mere presence of rain, however, does not mean that games will be cancelled. Our policy is to attempt to play all games when feasible. Even recent hard rain may not affect our games. The GCAA Sports Chairperson or appointed personnel will determine field playability as soon as reasonably possible prior to the beginning of games. On-field officials can cancel a game at the field of play, if necessary. Coaches are not to call off games without authorization from a member of the GCAA Sports Committee.
1) There is standing water on the field.
2) The fields are wet to the point where playing the game will destroy the playing surface.
3) It is raining at the time of the scheduled game and the temperature is low enough to make conditions unbearable for the children.
4) The presence of thunder or lightning. The first lightning strike will cause a 30 minute delay, with subsequent strikes resetting the 30 minute delay.
If games start and the weather turns bad and necessitates the cancellation of later games it will be communicated to you as soon as possible. We strongly encourage each parent to check the website, emails, and or texts prior to coming to the fields for games. If you have not been notified of any adverse weather conditions, postponements, or cancellation up to 30 minutes prior, then everyone should assume that all matches for that day are being played as scheduled.
Whenever play is suspended EVERYONE shall leave the field and take shelter in substantial buildings or in cars with the windows rolled up. Avoid small rain shelters, dugouts, bleachers, trees, metal fences, gates, power poles, etc. Play shall not resume until 30 minutes from the last lightning or thunder. The maximum time for suspended play is 45 minutes, after which the game is called off.
Each sport uses different methods of communication in the event of inclement weather that requires practices or games to be cancelled:
Baseball - Email and send Rained Out text
Basketball - TBD
Soccer - Emails and texts registered GCAA members via the SI Play communication system. Updates the website's "Field Status" page for organizations and teams traveling to GCAA fields and sends our "Rained Out" texts to individuals who have registered with this service.
Softball - Emails and texts registered GCAA members via the SI Play communication system. For travel tournaments, the USSSA Director is reached and the Director contacts the teams. For games with the county, calls or emails are made to the coach or area director.
Volleyball - TBD
We will do everything in our power to play all scheduled games that are listed on each team's schedule. Due to field availability and time constraints, GCAA will not guarantee that matches will be rescheduled.
